Derek Jeter, shortstop for the New York Yankees just finished is final season playing baseball. Jeter was not just another player for the Yankees but he was a leader that gave him the nickname, "Captain."
Jeter over his career has appear in 2,747 games and had a .310 batting average with 3,465 hits. Jeter resides sixth of all time hits behind some baseball greats like Pete Rose and Hank Aaron.
Off the field Jeter promotes his charity Turn 2 Foundation, an effort that would work to keep kids away from drugs and alcohol. Turn 2 foundation has been awarded over $16 million dollars in grants to create and support programs and activities that motivate young kids to stay away from drugs and alcohol.
In addition to contributing his own funds, Derek hosts his annual Derek Jeter Celebrity Golf Classic in Tampa, Florida and the Turn 2 Foundation Dinner in New York City. Other events that Jeter hosts are: Jeters Leaders, Turn 2 Us Healthy Lifestyles, Turn 2 After School, Turn 2 Baseball Clinics, Proud To Be Me, Turn 2 Smart Moves, Holiday Express and the Turn 2 Endowed Scholarships. Recently, the Turn 2 Foundation donated $500,000 to launch the Derek Jeter Academy at Phoenix House in Tampa, an outpatient counseling center for troubled teens combining individual and family substance abuse treatment.
Jeter will be remembered as one of the best players on and off the field. Jeter is now an alumni great of the New York Yankees along with Babe Ruth, Micky Mantle, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, and many more.
Jeter not only has a local fan base of Bronx Bomber fans but has a national group of fans that will miss his remarkable hitting, fielding, and his greatest attribute, his leadership. #RE2SPECT
